We should blame ourselves
I have to disagree with Mr. Rene
Bas’ column, “Let’s resurrect our basic industries” (March
26) and his conclusions for our economic backwardness “because
they [Filipinos] were not allowed to develop it [industries] by
their colonizers.” Mr. Bas is backsliding to the ‘60s where
everyone is blaming the American, local Chinese businessmen, etc.
for our economic failure. Blaming everyone except ourselves!
Taiwan, Korea, and Singapore were
all former colonies. So with India and China (a de facto colony of
many foreign powers). Yet they all succeeded while we fail even
today.
We can’t substitute nationalism
for patriotism, dream for hard work, political propaganda for
achievements, etc. China was under a most corrupt government before
but when they learned to start loving their country—simple
patriotism—and sacrificed, they succeeded.
We should not blame anyone for
our failure but ourselves!

Labor subcontracting
That was a sad and revealing
commentary by Alito Malinao (The Manila Times, March 18). This is a
classic example of why the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.
How contractualization could go on for years without the
government intervening, when there is clearly an injustice being
committed at the workers’ expense, is beyond belief. Onli in da
Pilipins!
I hope Malinao’s column will
serve as a red flag for our public officials to look into the plight
of those workers and others like them who are suffering in silence
under the injustices of their employers. If just one politician gets
touched and is moved into action by this revelation, it would be
well worth the effort he made in researching and disclosing this
labor practice.

Congratulations for your courage
in exposing the evil practice of subcontracting. Please continue
exposing the people who prey on the poor so they can live like a
king.
