‘Datu PacMan’ offered role
of Datu Lapu-Lapu onstage

CEBU CITY: The Lapu-Lapu City Council has asked Manny “PacMan” Pacquiao to play the role of Mactan Chieftain Datu Lapu-Lapu in a reenactment of the Battle of Mactan, reported the Philippine News Agency on Sunday. The staging of the play will be held on the occasion of this year’s weeklong festivity dubbed “Kadaugan sa Mactan” (Victory in Mactan).

The City Council has approved unanimously a resolution asking Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao, Manny’s full name, to demonstrate once again the strength and bravery of the first Filipino who repulsed the attack of Portuguese conqueror Ferdinand Magellan 487 years ago.

”It would be a great honor that the role of Datu Lapu-Lapu be portrayed by an equally brave and strong gentleman like Manny Pacquiao,” the resolution said.

Pacquiao is himself now a “Datu” of the B’laan in Sarangani. He was conferred the title following his recent ring victory when he returned to Gen. Santos Thursday last week.

As the local tourism council chairman of Malungon, an isolated place occupied by tribal minorities, the world-boxing champion committed some P30 million for the concreting of the 8-kilometer Poblacion-Sitio Kalunbarak farm-to-market road.

The weeklong activities in Lapu Lapu City will kick off on April 18.
