CAMARINES SUR 2nd district Representative Luis
Villafuerte is urging businessman Manny Pangilinan to honor the
agreement signed by the Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP)
and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) for the best interest
of the sport.
Villafuerte noted that it was
stipulated in the agreement signed on February 4, 2007 in Bangkok,
Thailand that the BAP and SBP combined will hold an election to be
held after a year or on or about Feb 5, 2008.
The two groups decided to unite
last year for FIBA to lift the country’s ban from international
basketball competitions.
They succeeded on their common
goal, but the friction between them remained.
While it appeared that they’re
getting along nicely, Villafuerte’s remarks proved it otherwise.
“I observed in reading
newspaper reports of meetings between BAP-SBP. I have never been
invited to such board meetings,” said Villafuerte, the elected
chairman of the BAP.
Villafuerte pointed out that
pursuant to the agreement they signed, he should remain as chairman
in the BAP-SBP merger with Pangilinan as president.
“In view of the foregoing, I
invoke my right and prerogative to act as chairman of the BAP-SBP
Board of Trustees,” Villafuerte said.
“The letter and spirit of the
agreement between the BAP and SBP must be implemented. Precisely,
the intention of the agreement was to achieve rapprochement and
reconciliation between the BAP and the SBP under the supervision of
FIBA and FIBA Asia.”
