MANILA: Senior Philippine officials on Saturday expressed concern
about the plan for a Southeast Asian rice cartel, saying it would
cause greater problems than it would solve amid a global food
crisis.
The so-called Organization of Rice-Exporting
Countries (OREC) is “anti-poor and will only exacerbate hunger and
poverty rather than ease it,” Senate Majority Leader Francis
Pangilinan said in a statement. “They have to think twice for
humanitarian reasons.”
MORE than 50 journalists from various media
groups marked World Press Freedom Day on May 3 by offering flowers
at the national shrine of Marcelo H. del Pilar in Bulacan and
holding a fellowship of songs and poems in the night.
WHILE the government has only banned organ
transplants benefiting foreign patients, the Department of Health on
Saturday said extending the ban to Filipino organ donors who are not
related to organ recipients could also be possible.
