Diplomat elected to int’l labor migrants body

AMBASSADOR to Canada Jose Brillantes was elected as vice-chairperson of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CPRMW) during a public meeting to elect a new bureau from among its members, in Geneva on April 15.

This was reported by the Philippine Embassy in Ottawa to the Department of Foreign Affairs.

Aside from Brillantes, also elected to the same post were Anamaria Dieguez of Guatemala and Azad Taghizadet of Azerbaijan.

Abdelhamid El Jamri from Morocco was elected as Committee Chairperson; and Francisco Alba of Mexico was designated Rapporteur.

The CPRMW was set up in 2004 based on the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Their Families and is set to begin consideration of country reports on the implementation of the convention. Syria will present the first report.

Outgoing Chairperson Prasad Kariyawasam recommended during the public meeting and election that the CPRMW concentrate on efforts to universalize the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families.

Currently, states parties to the Convention include Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Morocco and Philippines.
