AMBASSADOR to Canada Jose Brillantes was elected as vice-chairperson
of the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant
Workers and Members of Their Families (CPRMW) during a public
meeting to elect a new bureau from among its members, in Geneva on
April 15.
This was reported by the Philippine Embassy in
Ottawa to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Aside from Brillantes, also elected to the same
post were Anamaria Dieguez of Guatemala and Azad Taghizadet of
Azerbaijan.
Abdelhamid El Jamri from Morocco was elected as
Committee Chairperson; and Francisco Alba of Mexico was designated
Rapporteur.
The CPRMW was set up in 2004 based on the
International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All
Migrant Workers and Their Families and is set to begin consideration
of country reports on the implementation of the convention. Syria
will present the first report.
Outgoing Chairperson Prasad Kariyawasam
recommended during the public meeting and election that the CPRMW
concentrate on efforts to universalize the International Convention
on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members
of Their Families.
Currently, states parties to the Convention
include Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Ecuador, Egypt,
El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Morocco and Philippines.
