DEFENDING junior champion San Sebastian College and
reigning national inter-secondary titlist Benedictine International
School debuted with similar impressive victories in the 2008 Nike
Summer League basketball tournament at the Far Eastern University
gym in Morayta, Manila.
The Stagletts defeated University
of Perpetual Help, 83-71, while the Tigersharks overwhelmed Grace
Christian High School (GCHS), 64-56.
Marco Cam scored 16 points while
Joseph Gusi and Arnold Vosotros added 15 and 14, respectively, for
the Staglets of coach Raymund Valenzona.
Eugen Cuevas finished with 16
points for the Altalettes, who dropped to 3-1 in Group B.
The Capitol Hills-based
Tigersharks of coach Beaujing Acot leaned on the 1-2 punch of
Eduardo Daquioag and Jeffrey Javillonar to beat GCHS in Group D.
Daquioag scattered 29 points and
Javillaonar added 16 points for the Tigersharks, who are still fresh
from a goodwill game aganst the Xiamen University in Xiamen, China.
In the other junior games,
Adamson University downed St. Stephen High School, 60-50; De La
Salle-Zobel crushed Philippine College of Criminology, 70-57; Chiang
Kai Shek nipped Notre Dame, 65-24 and Don Bosco Technical College
clobbered Jose Abad Santos Memorial School, 85-41.
Mark Juruena scattered a
game-high 24 points to lead the Baby Falcons to their second
straight win in Group B.
Clyde Aparicio paced St. Stephen
with 21 points.
The Bengals relied on Ridge
Santos’ 20 points to register their third win in four outings in
Group A. Nico Elorde contributed 17 points, Luigi de la Paz had 13
and Gwyne Capacio added 12 points for the Ayala Alabang-based
school.
Don Bosco got a combined 54
points from Emmanuel Torres, John Makabanta and Marcelo Makalintal
to post its first win in five matches.
Torres fired 20 points, Makabanta
had 18 and Makalintal added 16 points.
In the seniors division,
Polytechnic Univresity of the Philippines (PUP) upset University of
the Philippines, 75-70. Gener Porio and Gerald Taguinod scored 22
and 17 points for PUP, which improved its record to 1-2 card.
In the women’s division,
University of Santo Tomas whipped Philippine Women’s University,
75-35, Anna Katrina Angelo had 18 points while Jubelyn Andaya cipped
in 14 for the Lady Tigresses, who notched their second straight win
in Group B.
