Guba, Zoleta rule Alcala Cup

FOURTH seed Yannick Guba ended seven years of frustration by winning his first Open title in the 1st Gov. Anacleto C. Alcala Memorial Cup at the Lucena City Tennis Club shell court.

Banking on his brilliant all-round game, the 22-year-old netter from La Carlota City in Negros Occidental defeated former RP Davis Cupper and third seed Rolando Ruel Jr., 6-4, 6-2, to pocket the P20,000 top purse.

“I’m so happy to have finally won my first title,” said Guba, who won back-to-back MVP titles while playing for De La Salle.

“It’s tough to play in this kind of surface and the weather was so hot. I tried to stay focused and get more points at the net,” added Guba, who received the champion’s trophy from Rep. Procy Alcala (Second District) of Quezon and LCTC President Benjo Marquez.

Earlier, local bet and tournament top seed Bambi Zoleta stamped her class over second seed Aileen Rogan, 6-2, 6-2, to win the ladies’ singles title.

Bambi and elder sister Bien went home with their fourth doubles title following a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Alyssa Callejo and Rogan.

Top seeds Ronald Joven and Rocky Paglalunan claimed their second doubles title after beating second seeds Alexander Lazaro and Patrick John Tierro, 7-5, 6-7 (4) (10-3).

In other results, Anacleto Alcala Jr. and Boyet Castro beat Eboy Salvacion and Ody Tayag, 7-5, 4-6 (10-5), in the men’s doubles 35 and above. Alcala also topped the 45 and above division, teaming up with Boboy Contado to whip Ding Aparte and Erwin Pastrana, 6-0, 6-0.
