Pool sharks vie for Mandaluyong Mayor’s Cup

WORLD renowned cue artists will gather in Mandaluyong City on Tuesday to compete in the take off leg of the Philippine Pool Tour.

Former world champions Johnny Archer of the United States and Thorsten Hohmann of Germany will lead the charge of the international players in the event organized by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines and presented by San Miguel Beer.

Also competing in the tournament dubbed as the Mandaluyong Mayor’s Cup are top Asian players headed by Doha Asian Games 8-ball gold medal winner Satoshi Kawabata of Japan.

The PPT is a monthly series of tournaments to be staged in strategic cities all over the country. Each tournament features the discipline of Ten Ball, the most popular game in the country today.

Reigning national champion Antonio Gabica and Manny Pacquiao International Open winner Jeffrey de Luna will banner the campaign of the locals along with Mandaluyong’s very own Marlon Manalo.

Serving as host to the tournament are City Mayor Ben-hur Abalos and the people of Mandaluyong City.

The winner will get $10,000, the handsome Mayor Abalos trophy, and a guaranteed spot in the first World Ten Ball Championship in September.

The PPT will go to Puerto Princesa City in Palawan next month, and then to Cebu City, Davao City and Angeles City before concluding in Manila for the grand finals in December.

ABS-CBN Studio 23 will broadcast the Mandaluyong Cup live on May 10 and 11 with international commentators Ted Lerner and Bob Guerrero forming the broadcast team.

Star Billiards will provide all world-class billiards equipment to the tournament, consisting of eight Brunswick Metro tables, Ivan Simonis tournament cloth, and Aramith championship balls.
