WORLD renowned cue artists will gather in Mandaluyong City on
Tuesday to compete in the take off leg of the Philippine Pool Tour.
Former world champions Johnny Archer of the
United States and Thorsten Hohmann of Germany will lead the charge
of the international players in the event organized by the Billiards
and Snooker Congress of the Philippines and presented by San Miguel
Beer.
Also competing in the tournament dubbed as the
Mandaluyong Mayor’s Cup are top Asian players headed by Doha Asian
Games 8-ball gold medal winner Satoshi Kawabata of Japan.
The PPT is a monthly series of tournaments to be
staged in strategic cities all over the country. Each tournament
features the discipline of Ten Ball, the most popular game in the
country today.
Reigning national champion Antonio Gabica and
Manny Pacquiao International Open winner Jeffrey de Luna will banner
the campaign of the locals along with Mandaluyong’s very own
Marlon Manalo.
Serving as host to the tournament are City Mayor
Ben-hur Abalos and the people of Mandaluyong City.
The winner will get $10,000, the handsome Mayor
Abalos trophy, and a guaranteed spot in the first World Ten Ball
Championship in September.
The PPT will go to Puerto Princesa City in
Palawan next month, and then to Cebu City, Davao City and Angeles
City before concluding in Manila for the grand finals in December.
ABS-CBN Studio 23 will broadcast the Mandaluyong
Cup live on May 10 and 11 with international commentators Ted Lerner
and Bob Guerrero forming the broadcast team.
Star Billiards will provide all world-class
billiards equipment to the tournament, consisting of eight Brunswick
Metro tables, Ivan Simonis tournament cloth, and Aramith
championship balls.
