Ateneo eyes second win

ATENEO, bannered by Thai import Emorn Phanusit, eyes its second straight win against St. Benilde Tuesday even as University of San Jose-Recoletos battles Lyceum at resumption of quarterfinal round action in the Shakey’s V-League Season 5 at The Arena in San Juan.

A rare three-game bill is actually slated with University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, the other provincial team, kicking off its drive to the semis against UAAP champion Far Eastern U in the 4 p.m. main game.

The Lady Eagles, drawing additional firepower from Phanusit, who came away with 18 hits for a 21-point output in a straight-set rout of Lyceum last Sunday, are heavily fancied over the Blazers in their 12 noon clash. USJ-R, however, is expected to have its hands full against Lyceum in their 2 p.m. clash with the Cebuano spikers hoping to come up with a followup to their 25-20, 25-20, 25-23 win over the Blazers, also last Sunday. But the Pirates are also raring to bounce back from their loss to the Eagles and stay alive in the hunt for one of the two semis berths in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

The six squads are battling it out for the two semis slots in a single round robin with the top teams joining Adamson and San Sebastian in the next round.

Meanwhile, the Ateneo-St. Benilde clash will be aired on NBN-4 starting at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. The Lyceum-USJ-R game will be telecast Thursday while the USLS-FEU match will be shown on Friday. For details, log on www.vleague.ph.
