Upsets rock Mayor’s Cup 10-ball tilt

UPSETS marred the second round of the Mandaluyong Mayor’s Cup 10-Ball Championship late Wednesday at the Kaban ng Hiyas Building in Mandaluyong City.

Policeman Alex Nobleza stunned highly touted Jeffrey “Jeff Bata” de Luna, 9-8, while Mario Tolentino shocked former world champion Johnny Archer of the United States, 9-7, to remain in the winner’s side of the event presented by San Miguel Beer.

Nobleza, a virtual unknown from Camarines Sur, earlier defeated James de Leon, 9-4. He will next face Kenji Taguchi of Japan who downed Fidel Punzalan, 9-8, and John Carlo Cerna, 9-0.

The former house pro in Kuwait and a former semifinalist in the national open opened his account with a 9-0 thrashing of Jestoni Magadia. His next opponent would be Bob Flores who took the measures of Ken Escano, 9-6, and Michael Mengorio, 9-4.

Mandaluyong’s proud son Marlon Manalo dodged stray bullets to stay on the right side of the draw.

He followed up his 9-6 win over Luis Saberdo with a 9-7 disposal of snooker player James Al Ortega.
