A PHILIPPINE army general is to be tried in military
court for corruption after being indicted for allegedly extorting
money from would-be recruits said to be ineligible as soldiers, a
military spokesman said Friday.
Maj. Gen. Jose Barbieto has been
detained and sacked from his post as commander of an army division
since the allegations surfaced.
He is to stand trial for unlawful
enlistment, conduct unbecoming and conduct prejudicial to good order
and military discipline, military spokesman Lt. Col. Bartolome
Bacarro told reporters.
The trial dates were not
announced.
