Online career guide now
accessible at GMA Jobs Center

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) today said that a valuable, free Career Guide has been made accessible online for new graduates and jobseekers at the newly launched GMA (Greater Modular Access) Jobs Center kiosks now operational in key malls and local government units nationwide.

By means of the Career Guide, the DOLE, through the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) that supervises the GMA Jobs Center, aims to broaden relevant information on highly in-demand, but hard to fill occupations, and increase the access to opportunities.

By making widely available such valuable career guidance information for free in the Internet, DOLE said jobs and skills mismatch can be further remedied to facilitate job hunting for Filipinos, specially the youth.

Toward this purpose, the BLE and the International Labor Organization, developed the complementary Guiding Youth Careers—A handbook for those young jobseekers.

Also accessible online, the said handbook may be used by guidance counselors in vitally assisting young jobseekers, by providing them with effective direction and advice pertaining to their career and job searches.

The Career Guide is a series of occupational briefs on more than 40 occupations, and contains relevant information such as the nature of a job, its education and competency requirements, earnings, employment and job outlook.

He added that the guide covers the in-demand occupations identified during the DOLE-led National Human Resource Conference in 2007.

The occupations are: accountant, aircraft mechanic, animator, architect, barista, bartender, CAD operator, call-center agent, caregiver, chef, civil engineer, commercial airline pilot, computer programmer, cook, dietician, electrical engineer, geologist, heavy equipment mechanic, heavy equipment operator, hotel reservations officer, massage therapist, mechanical engineer, medical technologist, medical transcriptionist, metallurgical engineer, mining engineer, nursing assistant, physical therapist, optometrist, pharmacist, physical therapist, professional nurse, receptionist, retail salesperson, room attendant, software engineer, surveyor, telemarketer, tour guide, travel agent, waiter/waitress, welding and metal fabricator.

The GMA Job Center kiosks were launched nationally at the following malls on May 1: Starmills (San Fernando, Pampanga); Galeria (Ortigas) and Forum (Pioneer, Mandaluyong); Lipa City, Batangas, and Dasmarñias, Cavite; Iloilo City and Bacolod City, and earlier at the Robinson’s Mall in Malate, Manila.

The GMA Jobs Center is the Philippines’ first unified and synchronized system incorporating the DOLE’s time-tested Phil-Jobnet job search facility, with a better capacity to reach out to a much greater client base with free, relevant jobs and skills information.

Besides the online kiosks, the Career Guide is also readily accessible at the Internet directly through the Philjobnet website at www.phil-job.net, or the Bureau of Local Employment website at www.ble.dole.gov.ph.
