New condo developments afford middle-income couples new lifestyles

Having a double source of income has allowed many middle-income married professionals in the Philippines the luxury of owning their own condominium unit close to either their place of work or the kids’ school.

Rowena and Bryan Orpiano, both engineers at a local telecommunications company, bought a studio unit at the first tower of Avida Towers Sucat in 2006. Newly married then, they found it convenient that their unit was just one ride away from the office.

The Orpianos join the ranks of young executives, entrepreneurs and professionals who have benefited from middle-income housing developments that have sprouted throughout Metro Manila. Developers such as Avida, the affordable housing arm of Ayala Land, have been encouraged to cater to this market where demand is huge, given the country’s young population. Low-interest rates on housing loans as well as the remittances of overseas Filipino worker, whose spending priorities include buying a home, have further sustained this market.

Living in a well-managed condominium development has also allowed the couple small luxuries such as entertaining in the social hall and playground of the compound. Their son Dean celebrated his second birthday at the condominium’s multipurpose hall.

Rowena, who has to work during daytime, also notes that she feels more secure about leaving Dean with two househelpers in Avida Towers Sucat where the security and other personnel are conscientious about enforcing regulations. The condo’s homeowners association requires that househelpers fill up a form before they leave the premises.

Avida Towers Sucat is one of the four in-city condominium developments of Avida Land that offers studio, one- and two-bedroom units.

Beyond security, the Orpianos appreciate that Avida’s property management ensures that they enjoy efficient services. When Metro Manila was battered by typhoon Milenyo on October 2006 cutting off power lines, the rest of the city suffered from massive brownouts for almost one week. Avida Towers Sucat residents had uninterrupted electricity and water supply. In fact, even the elevator was running.

If their finances allow it, the couple intends to buy a larger unit still within Avida Towers Sucat as they pursue their dreams of providing a brighter future for themselves and their young families. Bryan is now working overseas to be able to achieve that dream.
