Bernardine NiÑo Siso and Martina Guba won two titles each at the
close of the Head Junior Tennis Tour on Saturday at the Rizal
Memorial Tennis Center.
Siso, winner of seven gold medals in the
14-under division of the International Junior Tennis Tour in
Malaysia last year, defeated Israel Abarquez 6-3, 6-3 to win the
boys’ 16-under class. He also clinched the 18-under title after
Kim Ivor Saraza retired with the score tied at 4-4 in the first set.
“It was a great week. It’s so hard to play
under the sun but I just kept on motivating myself to achieve my
plan in this tournament and I am happy that I was able to make it
again,” said Siso, who bagged the 14-under and 16-under titles
last year.
“He [Saraza] was a good player. Mabilis siyang
kumilos pero siguro napagod na rin siya. I am looking forward to
meet him again in some other tournaments,” added Siso, who lost
the gold medal to Saraza in the Palarong Pambansa last month.
Guba, a native of La Carlota City, Negros
Occidental, captured the girls’ 16-under title over Marinel Rudas
6-4, 6-0. She annexed the 18-under title after posting a 6-4, 6-1
win over Sarah Jane Lim.
In other results, No. 4 Jurence Mendoza came
away with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 3 Joachim Samson to seize the
boys’ 12-under grade while No. 4 Jacob Lagman forced No. 1 Arjohn
dela Cruz to withdraw 6-2, 4-6, 3-1 (ret.) to pocket the boys’
14-under division.
Top seed Ericka Lagura took the girls’
12-under title over No. 2 Kartina Orteza 6-3, 7-5 while No. 1
Shanine Olivarez held off the late rally of No. 3 Sally Mae Siso
6-3, 7-5 to claim the girls’ 14-under crown. No. 1 Eric Olivarez
won the unisex 10-under title over No. 4 Albert Lim Jr. 6-0, 6-1.
