FEU, USJ-R spikers in vital encounter

FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY (FEU) and University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) face each other in a crucial game Sunday even as St. Benilde and University of St. La Salle-Bacolod (USLS) knock each other out in the quarterfinal round of the Shakey’s V-League Season 5 at The Arena in San Juan.

Tied for third with 1-1 cards, the Tams and the Cebuanos go for the all-important victory at 2 p.m. with the winner catching idle Lyceum at second and staying in the hunt for the fourth and last semis berth.

Winless in two starts in the single round robin phase among six teams, the Blazers and the Bacolod spikers try to keep their flickering hopes alive when they slug it out at 12 noon.

Ateneo de Manila, enjoying top form, swept its first three games over Lyceum, St. Benilde and USLS in emphatic fashions to virtually clinch the third semis seat in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and leave the race for the last berth to the five other teams.

Lyceum has the inside track for the last semis slot after bouncing back from that Ateneo loss with victories over USJ-R and FEU.

But the Tams and the Cebuano spikers are expected to go all out as they seek to remain in the race for the last berth in the tournament organized by Sports Vision.

Expected to lead FEU’s bid are hitters Irish Morada, Shaira Gonzalez, Cherry Vivas and Mary Rose Cabanag. while Mechell Matuguina, Genie Sabas, Mae Marikit and Cristy Laroga will carry the cudgels for the Cebuano squad, which swept St. Benilde but dropped a 1-3 setback to a resurgent Lyceum side.

Meanwhile, the St. Benilde-USLS match will be shown on NBN-4 starting at 2 p.m. Monday while the FEU-USJ-R clash will be aired on Tuesday.
