ALEX Pagulayan downed Rodney Morris of the United States, 8-6, to
enter the semifinals of the PartyPoker.net World Pool Masters at the
Riviera Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It was a nip-and-tuck affair all the way until a
lucky break on the 14th rack paved the way for Pagulayan’s
victory.
After reaching the hill off a missed combo shot
by Morris on four and eight, Pagulayan elected for a push after his
break. But Morris countered with brilliant safety shot.
Pagulayan left the blue two open after his
counter-safety, but fluked the five to his delight and to the horror
of his opponent.
“Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than
good,” said Pagulayan.
Meanwhile, American Corey Deuel made it to the
quarterfinals after beating Christian Reimering, 8-5.
Reimering drew first blood in the error-laden
match, but Deuel proved steadier down the stretch.
Mika Immonen of Finland, a former world
champion, enjoyed a comfortable 8-2 win over reigning world champ
Daryl Peach of England to advance and set up a meeting with Deuel.
