‘Butchoy’ claims one life, another missing

GENERAL SANTOS CITY: One was killed, another reported missing as typhoon “Butchoy” hit the coastal towns of Sarangani.

The Interior department noted that some 127 families have already left the towns of Maitum and Kiamba, while more than 100 hectares of high-valued crops had already been destroyed as the storm’s signal started to rise on Sunday (May 11). “The flashfloods and strong winds smashed some P40-million worth of high-valued crops and properties, excluding some government-owned facilities and structures,” said the DILG provincial director, Flor Limpin.

In Gian town, Felix Lim, 39, died after he saved his two children from strapping waves, while a 12-year-old Kimberly Taguro was reported missing.

Reports said Lim and the rest of the family was ashore in Butal Beach when the unexpected strong waves struck his children Amir Am, 9 and Kitam Free, 7, who were both playing by the seashore. While the father succeeded in saving his children, he died due to a fatal cardiac arrest.

Phivolcs Seismologist Bedoria Abdullah has confirmed that there could be a possible growth of waves in Sarangani Bay but denied the possibility of a tidal wave.

Affected municipalities of Maitum and Kiamba include barangays New La Union, Wali, Pangi and Kiambing, Datu Dani, Tablao, Luma, Poblacion and Badtasan.

Pagasa advised people living by the riverside and seashores in the area to evacuate as the weather bureau warned them of a possible stronger signal brought about by Southwest monsoon winds.
