ROME: Novak Djokovic staged a comeback over fast rising Swiss player
Stanislas Wawrinka to lift his third major title of the season with
a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, victory on Sunday at the Rome Masters.
The Serb world’s No. 3’s win in two hours,
four minutes also put more pressure on world’s No. 2 Rafael Nadal,
winner of three previous editions at the Foro Italico.
Djokovic, moves within 310 points of the
Spaniard, who lost in the second round and drops championship points
from 2007.
The pair could meet next week in a decisive
semifinal at Hamburg.
Djokovic managed to spend precious extra seconds
in a lingering trophy presentation embrace with Argentina’s former
tennis pin-up Gabriela Sabatini, a multiple former Rome champion.
“This is one of the best events that I’ve
won,” said Djokovic, who also claimed the Australian Open and
Indian Wells Masters this season. “I hope to be number one, but I
don’t want to think of it yet.
“I know people are thinking of me among the
best players, maybe in one or two years I can be there.”
