Typhoon ‘Butchoy,’ tropical depression ‘Cosme’ maintain threatening presence in Visayas

ILOILO CITY: The number of affected persons due to Typhoon “Butchoy” and tropical depression “Cosme” have now increased to 16,229 per latest report of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council-Office of Civil Defense here in Western Visayas, reported the Philippine News Agency.

The affected families numbering some 3,153 are from the municipalities of Cauayan, Hinobaan, Ilog, San Enrique and Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental where there have been flooding and flashfloods.

Aside from the affected persons, there are also six totally damaged houses and 24 partially damaged houses in Hinobaan town.

The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) is closely monitoring the towns of Pavia, Dumangas and Igbaras for possible flooding, said PDCC Secretary Jerry Bionat.

In Pavia, the floodwater level reached two feet as of 10 a.m on Thursday.

A house has been totally damaged in Barangay Maliao and some 1,167 households have been affected in nine other barangays of Pavia.

In Dumangas, particularly in Balud, Campayan, Maquina and Bantud Fabrica, the floodwater has reached two-feet to three-feet high.

In Igbaras, a landslide occurred along the road in Barangay Risoan but is now passable.

There are no more deaths reported except that of Marilyn Oliverio, 15 years old, of Barangay Guilungan, Cauayan who may have been carried away by the sudden rush of water while crossing a bridge with another girl Melanie Elardes who remains missing.

In Antique province, Leo Esparagoza is still subject of a search and rescue operation.

Esparagoza is believed to have been carried away by the water due to the overflow of Ipil Creek in Sitio Lay-on, Barangay Ipil in Barbaza town.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office VI reported that road damages from Bacolod to the southern part of Negros Occidental has been estimated to be around P6 million.

DPWH has also reported damage on the approach of a bridge in Ajuy town although the amount is still being ascertained.

In Jaro district, a swollen river burst its banks and inundated several villages, although there were no immediate reports of any casualties.

An Agence France-Presse reporter said people were wading in waist-deep waters as rains continued, while the local government has fielded trucks to ferry those stranded.

In nearby Negros Occidental province, nearly 6,000 people have been displaced by floods that hit at least five villages, local media quoted the regional social welfare department as saying.

The rains were caused by a storm brewing off the Central Visayas region, with the state weather bureau saying it was expected to dump more rain in the coming days.
