JAIPUR, India: An unknown Islamic group claimed
responsibility for a string of bombings that killed 63 people and
warned of more attacks on Indian tourist targets, officials said
Thursday. Gulab Chand Kataria, home minister of the northern state
of Rajasthan (Jaipur’s capital), said the police were
investigating the claim made in a video clip e-mailed to media
organizations stating that the “Indian Mujahideen is waging an
open war against the country for supporting the United States and
the United Kingdom on international issues.”
SEOUL: South Korea said Thursday
it wants direct talks with North Korea to discuss providing badly
needed food aid, apparently softening its position that the
communist state must first ask for help. “If we have a chance, we
will talk directly to Pyongyang” on food aid, Foreign Minister Yu
Myung Hwan told reporters.
TOKYO: Greenpeace on Thursday
accused Japanese whalers of stealing meat from the country’s
annual research hunt in the Antarctic and selling it on the black
market. The environmental group said it had filed a criminal
complaint with the Tokyo District Public Prosecutor’s Office
against 12 crew members, using a box of meat it obtained as evidence
and noted that a four-month investigation found the Nisshin Maru
factory ship crew smuggling the meat ashore in bags and passed it to
traders to be sold illegally.
JERUSALEM: US President George W.
Bush took a tough stance against Israel’s armed foes on Thursday,
a day after a rocket fired by Gaza militants wounded 14 people.
“The alliance between our governments is unbreakable,” Bush said
in an address to the Israeli parliament marking the 60th anniversary
of the creation of Israel, an event the Palestinians regard as a
“catastrophe.” “When you [Israel] confront terror and evil,
you’ll be strong because America stands with you.”
