FRANCISCO “Django” Bustamante got the better of his marquee duel
against compatriot and reigning national open champion Lee Van
“The Slayer” Corteza, 11-6, to storm into the semifinals of the
2008 Predator International 10-Ball Championships Saturday at the
Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
Bustamante, playing under the banner of Puyat
Sports, took command early. He raced to an 8-5 lead and never looked
back.
Meanwhile, Tony “Tornado” Drago of Malta
also advanced to the semifinal round after beating former world
9-ball champion and World Pool Masters winner Alex “The Lion”
Pagulayan 11-10.
Pagulayan was the first to reach the hill at
10-9, but Drago proved steadier down the stretch.
Bustamante earlier crushed Rob Saez of the US
while Drago nipped Darren Appleton of the United Kingdom.
In other “Sweet 16” results, Pagulayan
waylaid 2006 US Open kingpin John Schmidt of the US; Corteza
overpowered Gabe Owen of the US; Marcus Chamat of Sweden took the
measure of Neils Feijen of the Netherlands; defending Predator
10-Ball Champion Shane Van Boening of the US outplayed Ernesto
Dominguez of Mexico; Jeremy Jones of the US hammered Raj Hundal of
the United Kingdom; and Tyley Edey of Canada stunned 2007 WPA World
9-Ball winner Daryl Peach of England.
Still battling in the quarterfinals at press
time were Edey and Jones and Chamat and Van Boening.
