Makati Shangri-La recently held an art workshop for the children of
house of refuge in Marikina. As part of the hotel’s strong credo
on corporate social responsibility, a number pf hotel staff
participated in a day of arts and crafts where they helped the
children of House of Refuge create recycled art.
With the use of old newspapers, magazines, paper
cups, leftover fruits and vegetables, and practically anything else
that would be thrown in the trash, hotel staff aided the children in
creating art pieces while at the same time teaching them about the
importance of saving the environment and applies
environment-friendly practices not only within the walls of the
hotel but outside as well. By sharing recycling tips with children
at a very young age, there is a higher chance that these children
will imbibe these environmental tips into habits when they mature.
Other than creating art pieces, hotel staff also taught the kids
importance of trash segregation. Children were taught how to
segregate garbage into biodegradable and non-biodegradable; teaching
them to consider reusing or creating something new out of
non-biodegradable trash and to make compost out of biodegradable
trash.
House of Refuge, the hotel’s chosen
beneficiary, is a dedicated charitable group aimed at the
rehabilitation of homeless children. It is a non-stock, non-profit
foundation, driven to keep abandoned and abused children away from
the streets by providing them with education, spiritual guidance and
foster care.
Makati Shangri-La is continuously making
concerted efforts to contribute to society by holding various events
for the benefit of charitable foundations such as House of refuge.
With strong environment policies, unwavering community involvement,
continuous training and development, fervent management support and
passionate commitment from the staff, Makati Shangri-La continues to
set bench mark excellence in corporate social responsibility.
Shangri-La Hotels and resorts, Asia Pacific’s
leading luxury hotel group, signed a corporate responsibility (CSR)
policy into effect in 2007 and launched a two-year development
strategy to enhance its existing CSR activities. A corporate CSR
Committee, spearheaded by the group’s chief operating officer,
guides fulfillment of the group’s responsibilities in five key
areas: the environment; employees and the community; health and
safety; supply chain management; and stakeholder relations. For
