PEOPLE
By Bob Garon
Theism

Unless you are an atheist, you understand the importance of having God in your life. Even if you are not what you think you should be in His eyes, you continue to acknowledge the part He plays in your life.

They say that there is no atheist in foxholes. When men face death, those for whom God meant little suddenly find themselves praying to Him for help and relief.

For so many of us, God is there for us to call on Him when we need something. He is the medic whom we beg to heal us when faced with a life threatening condition. He is the fireman we summon when things get out of control and we run out of options. He is the counselor who has the answers when our relationships are not working out. And when all else fails, He is the miracle worker who can do the impossible.

When, however, all is well, we tend to forget Him, neglect Him and take Him for granted. When the sun shines on us, we tend not to care much about Him. When the storm clouds are upon us, however, we suddenly look for Him. And when He doesn’t respond to us quickly, we get upset with Him and accuse Him of not caring and not answering our prayers. Even if we know that “no” is still an answer, we refuse to accept what we see is any form of rejection of our petitions. In short, we are like spoiled brats who insist on getting what they want, when they want it and how they want it.

What we need to do is grow up and mature spiritually. We need to understand and accept that God is not a yes man who is subservient to us. We need to recognize that He is who He is, the Lord and Master of all that is. That being the case, we must remember who we are and who He is and know our place in the grand scheme of things.

When we ask for something, we should be prepared to be denied. At the same time, we accept that what is to us a denial is for God part of an over all plan for us. The many severe limitations that are ours get in the way of seeing down the road. God sees what we cannot see. We often ask for what works against us. When He rejects my petition, I often can later see very clearly that His rejection was a blessing in disguise.
