‘Django’ falls short in Vegas

FRANCISCO “Django” Bustamante settled for a runner-up finish in the 8th Predator Invitational 10-Ball Championship.

Bustamante fell to Tony Drago of Malta in the finals, 10-13, Sunday at the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Drago went home with the top prize of $17,000.

It was the second straight year that a Filipino placed second in the prestigious tournament.

Dennis Orcollo, the world’s top ranked player, bowed to American Shane Van Boening in the finals last year.

Bustamante was looking for his second major title this year. He won the Master of the Table title in the Derby City Classic in January.

But he ran out of gas against the rapid shooting veteran.

Dubbed as “Tornado” in the pool world, Drago is no stranger to big matches in Las Vegas. He was the man of the week back in December when his Team Europe scored an upset win over Team USA in the Mosconi Cup.

He made his way into the Last 16 without a defeat and ousted Marcus Chamat of Sweden, Darren Appleton of United Kingdom and Alex Pagulayan in the single elimination stage.

Bustamante, on the other hand, eliminated Jeremy Jones and Robb Saez of the United States and countryman Lee Van Corteza in the knockout phase.
