HONESTY is still the best policy for a utility worker of the
Department of Education Central Office in Pasig City as he returned
the P150,000 in cash he found to its owner.
Noli Betsayda, 31, found a bundle of P500 bills
worth P150,000 in the garbage can of the Education department’s
Staff Development Division office around 5:30 p.m. on April 30,
2008.
“It was a simple judgement. That is not my
money, so I had to return it to its owner,” Betsayda said in
Filipino.
In recognition for his good deed, Education
Secretary Jesli Lapus granted Betsayda a Certificate of Commendation
and a P5,000 cash gift “in recognition of his exemplary honesty
worthy of emulation for everyone.”
Betsayda could have easily kept the money since
his 71-year-old mother needs a cataract operation, but he did not
let that circumstance to get in the way of his honesty.
“I really never thought of taking the
money,” he added.
Betsayda, who has been a contractual employee of
the agency for the last nine years, believes that his good deed
reflects the Education department’s commitment to serve.
