PEOPLE
By Bob Garon
Punishment

When your life is filled with tears and sadness, you might be tempted to think that God has abandoned you or, worse, is somehow out to get you. Perhaps He is upset with you and feels you are in need of punishment.

We tend to look at God as we see people. We cannot be blamed because we do not understand the mind of God. Nobody can. As a result, we keep guessing about what He is up to.

Pain comes into our lives and we cannot help wondering if God is slapping us with some kind of divine retribution.

It is so difficult for us to reconcile God, the great lover, and God, the just one who punishes and rewards. Again, this is because we truly have no idea why God does what He does. Sure, theologians can give us all kinds of explanations, but none is satisfactory because they too do not know God’s mind and the motives behind His actions.

We know, we believe, that He rules the universe, but we truly do not know how He does this. In the same way, we know through faith that He works in our lives, but, again, we don’t know how He does this.

Consequently, when things happen to us, good and bad, we cannot be sure what He has in mind. So we make our judgments about Him and His motivations the way we judge our fellowmen.

If we get hurt, it is easy for us to think that something isn’t right with Him. If things go well, we assume that He is blessing us because He is on good terms with us.

I believe that God always loves us, even when we are doing our foolishness. We cannot disturb Him because to do so would mean that we have some kind of power over Him. If I can disturb you and upset you, then I have a measure of power over you. That is not possible with God. He remains beyond our ability to control Him.

It seems to me that when we are in trouble, it is mostly because of our own doing. God does not push us into trouble. We do a pretty good job of that by ourselves. And if we behave and do the right thing, then we will find a measure of happiness.

In the end, however, we need to have faith and believe without the benefit of absolute proof that God does love us and desires only what is good for us.
