THE damage caused by tropical storm “Cosme” to
agriculture and infrastructure was estimated to be at P3.4 billion,
with 37 people left dead, one missing and 182,930 families
displaced, latest reports from the National Disaster Coordinating
Council (NDCC) showed.
The damage and casualties were
mostly from the Ilocos regions, Central Luzon and the Cordillera
Administrative Region. Pangasinan had the most number of fatalities
with 28 and the most number of families affected with 133,846,
followed by Zambales with 29,692.
Agriculture sustained the most
damages with P3.3 billion, while damage to school buildings was P149
million and to infrastructure P19 million.
Zambales and Pangasinan have
already been placed under the state of calamity.
The NDCC added that a total of
174,748 houses were also destroyed or damaged in the provinces of La
Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Benguet, Iloilo, Negros Occidental and
Negros Oriental.
The agency said P2-million worth
of assistance has been initially extended to the victims of the
storm by the Department of Social Welfare and Development,
nongovernment organizations and local government units.
