The Commission on Higher
Education (CHED) has extended the deadline for integration of
review centers with existing schools in the country for another six
months, CHED Executive Director William Medrano said Wednesday.
“The deadline was extended
because other review centers asked for more time to finish their
documents for registration,” Medrano said.
CHED has pushed for the
integration of review centers and schools to maintain the integrity
of professional exams in the Philippines, and has extended the
deadline for the second time despite opposition from the Federation
of Accredited Review Centers of the Philippines (FARCP) and the
Excel Review and Training Center (ERTC).
The FARCP and ERTC argued that
another deadline extension would only give the impression the
commission lacks political will to sanitize review center operations
in the country.
There are 800 registered review
centers registered under Department of Trade and Industry, but only
20 of them have secured CHED permits.
Earlier, CHED Acting Chairman
Romulo Neri said his agency is not keen on extending the deadline,
because it was also prolonged for six months before the recent
postponement.
In 2006, the governments of the
US, Great Britain and Australia warned that they will not employ
Filipino professionals anymore as a consequence of the scandals that
involve cheating and leakages in professional licensure exams.
The government has threatened to
close down review centers that will fail to comply with the
integration order, which also seeks to inform students and their
parents about which review centers are legitimate.
