LETTER

Let Meralco defend itself, ABS-CBN

This pertains to the raging row between GSIS and Meralco which  boils down to the issue of a  power utiltity’s  accountability to its captive market which absorbs all the cost of its operation with the guarantee of profits. Round the clock, ABS-CBN breaks the news first, always giving comprehensive account of the news, taking all sides of each story. ABS-CBN has always been consistent on that aspect—whether it is reporting about the men and women walking at the corridors of power or men and women on the street.

But there is always something wrong when ABS-CBN is reporting about its sister company, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco).

How come ABS-CBN is not as objective as it has always been when chronicling the sins of the country’s biggest electricity distribution company?  We believe, ABS-CBN was grossly unfair when it decided to downplay findings in both the Senate and House of Representatives that Meralco had cheated and shortchanged its customers many times in many ways the past so many years.

We ask, must its affiliation get in the way of its better judgment?  ABS-CBN and Meralco are sister companies, but Meralco is Meralco and ABS-CBN is ABS-CBN.  Each has its own mandate. Let Meralco defend itself, but ABS-CBN must report the news about Meralco with as much passion when reporting other stories.

ABS-CBN owes this to all who it considers  “KAPAMILYA.”  Salamat po.
