Former Speaker Jose de Venecia will be asked about his role in the
Northrail contract should he appear before the Senate blue-ribbon
committee, Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile said Thursday.
De Venecia had already expressed his willingness
to appear before the blue ribbon to testify on what he knows about
the aborted $329-million national broadband network contract with
ZTE, a Chinese telecommunications firm.
Enrile said that although de Venecia would be
testifying on the broadband deal, he could be asked about the
Northrail contract should the inquiry dwell on Chinese contracts,
including the rail project, in general.
Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano, chairman of the blue
ribbon, had announced that he would reopen the broadband inquiry
with the reported readiness of one “alias Alex” to testify on
President Gloria Arroyo’s supposed “surprise visit” to ZTE
headquarters in Shenzhen, China five months before she witnessed the
signing of the contract. She later said when she cancelled the
contract that she did not know the supposed onerous details of the
contract.
