CLARK FREEPORT, Pampanga: Clark International Airport
authorities said there is no need to panic over the reported
transfer of the United Parcel Service (UPS) intra-Asia hub to
Shenzhen, China.
President and CEO Victor Jose I.
Luciano of the Clark International Airport Corp. said the
world’s largest air cargo carrier will still maintain and operate
its hub here, although in a limited basis—from nine aircrafts to
two after 2010.
UPS top officials are moving its
intra-Asia air hub from the Philippines to Shenzhen in China’s
thriving Pearl River Delta to improve customer service by reducing
transit times across Asia.
UPS Senior Vice President Andy
Connelly said the transfer of the hub from Diosdado Macapagal
International Airport in Clark Freeport is a “business decision of
UPS” because of the growing business in North Asia.
Connelly has informed Luciano,
Clark Development Corporation Chair Rizalino S. Navarro, the
Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of
Transportation and Communication that air cargo carrier would
continue operating here as its multi-hub network in Asia.
Meanwhile, Luciano said there’s
no need to be alarmed about the transfer of the UPS intra-Asia hub
in China because the air cargo firm will still operate in Clark as
its Philippine gateway.
UPS Clark-based workers have been
assured that no dislocation will happen, as alternative employment
opportunities will be offered those affected by the transfer of the
hub to China.
UPS will continue the agreement
signed with Clark authorities because their operations in the
Philippines remain vital, said Connelly.
In addition to Clark’s role as
the main import and export gateway for the Philippines, UPS is
exploring alternative operations. As an employer that values its
employees and with a strong tradition of promoting from within the
company, UPS is identifying other employment opportunities within
the UPS network for those who will be affected by the transition.
