Three Filipinos killed in Shanghai

Three Filipinos were killed while ten others were hospitalized from a gas leak accident in a shipyard in Shanghai, China.

The Philippine Consulate General in Shanghai, acting head of post Aileen Mendiola-Rau, reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs that three Filipino seamen died of carbon dioxide poisoning on May 22 from an accidental gas leak at the Chongming Dadong Shipping Yard.

The fatalities were identified as Heracleof Casas, 44, Ferdinand Armendares, 40, and Rex Villaruz, 37. Ten other Filipino seamen were brought to the Chongming Hospital for treatment. Their identities have not yet been released.

All the Filipino seamen were crewmembers of the Panama-registered M/V Hakone.

The ten who were hospitalized had been cleared from the accident but had run to the scene to help their colleagues. However, they also succumbed to the effects of the gas leak, resulting in their hospitalization.

At Kuwait, the Department of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the investigation of the alleged murder of a Filipina domestic worker in Kabd Desert, Kuwait.

The services of a private counsel have been engaged by the department to help ensure protection of the rights of the victim.

Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait Ricardo Endaya reported to the department that Fatima Sagadan Maulana was found dead in Kabd Desert on May 16.

Kuwaiti police authorities declared that Maulana was probably murdered on May 9 as her body was already in the stage of decomposition when it was found.

Contrary earlier to reports of the Kuwaiti media, authorities said that the assailant had not burned the victim’s body, and the department has not confirmed reports that she had been raped. The body is still the subject of a forensic investigation.

The principal suspect, a Kuwaiti national named Mohammed Yassin Al-Mutairi, has already been arrested and charges have filed against him.

Maulana, who hails from Carmen, Cotabato, was the subject of a search after she failed to return to her employer’s house after taking a day off on May 6.
