Grandmaster-elect Jayson Gonzales will try to formalize his entry to
the elite rank when he leads the country’s campaign in the RP vs.
Myanmar FIDE-rated Goodwill Match Monday in Tagaytay City.
He defeated former RP junior champion National
Master Rolando Andador after 43 moves of Slav Defense in the final
round to emerge as overall champion in the 2008 Subic Open
International Chess Championship Friday.
Gonzales, who had already completed the required
three GM norms, collected 22 points from his winning effort to inch
closer to the 2500-mark. His unofficial rating after his recent
triumph is 2490.
Joining Gonzales in the team are National
Masters Andador, Rolando Nolte and Oliver Barbosa, Reggie Olay and
Dino Ballecer.
Gonzales nailed his third and final GM norm in
the Asean Master Chess Circuit GMT category event in January in
Tarakan, Indonesia. But he needs to break the 2500-barrier to
formally earn the GM title.
