President Gloria Arroyo on Monday appealed to
private higher education institutions, which cater to almost 70
percent of college students, to temporarily freeze plans to raise
tuition this school year, which starts next month.
But it was too late a call, according to two
student groups. They cited enrollment having begun in some of these
institutions, and that tertiary schools were excluded from the
appeal.
During a command conference at the Department of
Education main office in Pasig City, the Chief Executive said she
had ordered the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to relay her
appeal for the private higher education institutions to also shelve
their planned increases in tuition and other school fees.
