Government forces engage
suspected rebels in firefight

GENERAL TINIO, Nueva Ecija: A female member of the New People’s Army was captured while three high-powered firearms and a hand-held radio were recovered following a firefight that lasted for 20 minutes between a large group of suspected rebels and the combined police and military forces in Barangay Nazareth on Monday afternoon.

Several other rebels, estimated at 40 members with five females, were believed to have been wounded after the troops reportedly scampered for safety after the firefight in Sitio Kabilogan, Barangay Nazareth at about 3:30 pm, according to Senior Supt. Napoleon Taas, Nueva Ecija police director.

The confiscated firearms and subversive documents, meanwhile, were presented to Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado, newly installed commanding general of the Philippine Army, by Maj. Gen. Ralph Villanueva, commander of the Army’s 7th Infantry Division.

Taas said the success of the operation was a result of the memorandum of agreement earlier signed by the “Mamang Pulis” and the “Mamang Sundalo” of Nueva Ecija which was aimed at strengthening internal security operation.
