Peace across the Taiwan Strait

A HISTORIC meeting is taking place in Beijing where Chinese President Hu Jintao is hosting Wu Poh-hsiung, chairman of the Kuomintang Party of Taiwan, to discuss relations between Beijing and Taipei and prospects for greater peace across the Taiwan Strait and in East Asia.

The dialogue, the first in 60 years, is the highest-level contact for the two parties since Mao Zedong’s communist army pushed Chiang Kai-Shek’s nationalist troops from the mainland to the island across the strait.
