Joyful pains of Purgatory

Although most Christians Filipinos went to the tombs of their family dead yesterday, All Saints Day, today is an equally important feast—All Souls’ Day. In the Catholic missals the solemnity is called “The Commemoration of all the faithful departed.”

Today our prayers should be dedicated “in suffrage” for the souls in Purgatory. This use of the noun “suffrage”—which these days is very much in the minds of those concerned with whether it is Obama or McCain who will be the next US president—simply means “in intercession.”
