RP loses to China in World Chess Olympiad


DRESDEN, Germany: The Philippines dropped a close 1.5-2.5 decision to Asian champion China despite GM Wesley So’s stunning victory over super GM Ni Hua of China on board two at the start of the 38th World Chess Olympiad at the International Congress Center here Thursday (Friday Manila time).

So, the country’s highest-rated player with an ELO of 2610, exploited Ni’s uncharacteristic faulty opening strategy and hammered out a morale-boosting victory in 42 moves of the Ruy Lopez.
