Aparri overwhelms Csik
in world women’s boxing

NINGBO CITY, China: Veteran Alice Kate Aparri humbled Monika Csik of Hungary 7-2 Saturday to advance to the next round of the 2008 Women’s World Boxing Championships at the Ningbo Youngor Gymnasium.

The 24-year-old light flyweight build a 3-0 lead in the first round and continued pounding on the Hungarian to book the morale-boosting victory.

“Tinantiya ko yung lakas niya nung una pero nakita ko na kaya naman kaya nakipagsabayan din ako kaagad, said Aparri, a bronze medalist in this tournament two years ago.

Aparri will have a chance to rest Sunday before she faces Jacqueline Park of Canada, who barely escaped Kalpana Chowdhury of India 6-5.

Meanwhile, bantamweight Redelyn Digmayo of Baguio City lost to Vietnamese Nguyen Thi Hue.

Pinweight Josie Gabuco will see action Sunday against Vietnamese Nguyen Thi Hoa.

Other members of the RP squad funded by the Philippine Sports Commission and Pacific Heights are former Asian Champion Mitchel Martinez, Analisa Cruz and Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Annie Albania.
