The Pearl by John Steinbeck
|
|
By Perry Gil S. Mallari, Reporter
The fact that The Pearl, a 1947 novella written by John Steinbeck,
is still widely read and studied in many schools around the world
today is a proof of its substance and timeless appeal. Steinbeck is
a recipient of both the Nobel and the Pulitzer Prize.
The story revolves around the life of a family
in old La Paz, Mexico. Kino, a poor diver of pearls lives simply yet
happily with his wife Juana and son Coyotito. The ugly head of
discord creeps into their lives after Coyotito gets stung by a
scorpion and turned gravely ill. The only doctor in town, a
Westerner, refused to treat the baby because Kino and Juana don’t
have the money to pay for the treatment.

PEOPLE
By Bob Garon

Love is not most
important
|
|
The most important, most critical component in successful loving is
commitment. Not love. It’s easy to love without commitment. People
do it all the time—easy to love, to give of oneself for a while.
But commitment implies bonding in such a way that one promises to
keep the fires of love burning indefinitely.
