BFAD needs more resources

The melamine-tainted China milk scare has given us the opportunity to test the efficacy of government in protecting our citizens from contaminated products imported from abroad. The result, sad to say, is not encouraging.

Public concern has been rising over the seeming inability of the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) to cope with its task of testing milk and other dairy products from China to determine whether they contain the industrial chemical called melamine. A segment of the public is now also beginning to worry that something is seriously wrong with government’s ability to monitor imported food, remembering that last year there was also a food scare concerning China-made food products with formaldehyde in them.
