THE Philippine Basketball League will revive its tournament for
women next month.
The Women’s Philippine Basketball League (WPBL),
which was first held a decade ago during the time of PBL
Commissioner Yeng Guiao, will open simultaneously with the regular
men’s competition on November 8.
Guiao’s successor Chino Trinidad attributed
the revival of the novelty project to new league Chairman Mikee
Romero of Harbour Center.
“Actually, ang proponent nito ay si PBL
Chairman Mikee Romero. He was inspired to put up a women’s league
upon seeing for himself our RP women’s team compete in last
year’s Southeast Asian Games in Nakhonratchasima, Thailand,”
Trinidad recalled in Tuesday’s PSA Forum at the Shakey’s U.N.
Avenue branch. Also present were Romero, Harbour Centre team manager
Eric Arejola and PBL executive director Butch Maniego.
“I was inspired to form a league for our women
players because from what I saw in the SEA Games, kaya naman nating
talunin ang Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. Kulang lang talaga
tayo sa exposure, sa laro sa labas,” Romero added in the weekly
session sponsored by Shakey’s, Accel, Brickroad gym and Aspen spa
and MedCentral Medical Clinic and Diagnostic Center. For starters,
the league will be conducting open tryouts to all female players
below 25 years old on October 19 at the newly built Jose Rizal
University gym.
Trinidad said the tryout is open to all—even
former and current RP team members—provided that they meet the
corresponding age requirement.
