Taiwan looks forward
|
|
China and Taiwan, which calls itself the Republic of China, are
gravely at odds over Taipei’s status and global standing. China
claims Taiwan as a province belonging to the mainland. Taiwan
insists it is a democratic, sovereign state with the right to
self-determination and freedom from Beijing’s control. The tension
between the two is at the root of the conflict on the Taiwan Strait,
which has the potential to become a violent war if not properly
managed.
Taiwan, which observes its 97th national day
today, October 10, is the world’s 18th largest economy and 20th
biggest outbound investor. Part of its foreign policy is the
sponsorship of 34 long-term technical missions in 29 partner
countries. It was a long-standing member of the United Nations until
it was voted out 37 years ago in favor of the People’s Republic of
China.

How do we stop speed maniacs from crashing the red light? Warning
them of fatal consequences don’t work. Threats of stiff fines and
penalties don’t work. The Metro Manila Development Authority even
nailed pictures of its stern-looking chairman, Bayani Fernando, on
the roadside. No effect. What can we do?

There are eight million Filipino overseas workers. These Filipinos
have left the country for jobs abroad, mostly because they cannot
find jobs in their country. Or, they earn a better wage from jobs
based abroad.

It has been said that when America sneezes, the world catches a
cold. The inconceivable had already occurred with the collapse of
the strongest financial institutions. Of course, this predicament
causes more problems not only in the Unites States, but it is also
affecting other world markets.
