Survive like The Times

Business lessons from the paper

Let us depress you with a situationer. The greed of both oligarchs and besotted consumerists in America who spent money they didn’t have and sold the debt along with its supposedly lucrative interest to foreigners the world over are now dragging the entire global economy down the drain. And there’s nothing that the likes of us—ordinary folk in this small nation—can do.

In the 21st century, the world belongs to Asia. And we Filipinos still won’t belong. We were wannabe westerners for all of the 20th century. In the new millennium, we are the most un-Asian of Asians, stilly identifying more closely to the values and culture to westerners than to fellow Asians. People still don’t know what to make of our polyglot culture. In a world full of Chinese, Thai and Indian restaurants, the world knows little of the Philippines save for stereotype of nattering illegal immigrants converging at their parks on Sundays. Our culture is the only way we can distinguish ourselves from the global competition. And yet we all-too-easily assimilate foreign cultures and loose our identity.
