LETTER

Entertaining traffic cop performances

The Heads Up column by Joel Palacios on Friday October 10 reminded me of the policeman, Mr. Valentine Santiago, who studied law at the Far Eastern University. He was an amiable traffic copy at Plaza Lawton where did a kind of traffic direction ballet. The old Sunday Times Magazine of the 60s—or was it in fact the Times’ Mirror Magazine?— featured him.

Mr..Palacios said “In Romania, instead of hiring actors, traffic officers take ballet classes to make them do their work gracefully. ‘The aim is to develop an ability to regulate traffic and achieve elegance in their movements, which will not only be agreeable to the eyes but could also help drivers waiting at a red light get rid of their stress or sadness,’ the Romanian town police chief said.

Here in New Jersey, there is a performing traffic cop too—in South Orange. He didn’t take ballet lessons, like your Valentine Santiago.

They make life a little bit bearable.
