National Artist for Literature Francisco Sionil José

Master wordsmith

F. Sionil José eases up on his chair smiling then waves the three of us to settle down. He greeted us with the warmth of an old comrade. Sionil José, who holds the distinction of being the Philippines most widely translated author is also an alumni of the Sunday Times Magazine. He gladly accommodated my request for an interview after learning that the story would be used for 110th anniversary celebration of The Manila Times.

Not long after we’re seated, he asked my two photographer companions to open his office refrigerator, “I’m not going to serve you so go get yourself a drink,” he says lightheartedly.
