Everything but the girl named Shirley

Bandang Shirley debut its maiden album soon

As anyone familiar with Pinoy rock may have guessed, Ang Bandang Shirley got their name from the Eraserheads song (“Shirley” from Ultraelectromagneticpop). For bassist Jing Gaddi, he considers it as one of the greatest Eraserheads songs of all time: “It’s a beautiful pop song. Even if all their subsequent releases were better recorded, this for me is still the example of a beautiful pop song.”

For band frontman Owel Alvero, it may very well be the model they look up to when writing their song. “Whenever any of us writes songs for Bandang Shirley, I want a pop classic with a good story and hook that makes you go, ‘Whoa!,’” says Alvero. “We want to create that effect where it sounds something familiar and yet sounds something new—the timeless idea of a pop song. I really can’t quite put it into fewer words . . .” “Like ‘found familiar,’ Gaddi helpfully adds.
