Former national player lauds WPBL revival

Former Philippine team standout Haydee Ong said on Saturday that the revival of the Women’s Philippine Basketball League (WPBL) is a shot in the arm for women’s basketball in the country.

Ong, who will call the shots for Nutri-C (not Godiva as earlier reported) in the coming tournament, emphasized the need for a highly competitive tournament in the country in order to raise the level of game of female cagers as well as encourage the young ones to take up the sport seriously.

“The revival of women’s tournament is good because this will showcase our own brand of basketball and this will also help the national team,” said Ong, who is expected to watch open tryout, which the PBL will conduct on Sunday at the Jose Rizal University gym.

“This kind of tournament is going to help the sports program of women’s basketball, I just hope others will get involve in this kind of project,” said Ong.

Close to 100 players from various colleges and universities are expected to join the tryout, which will be supervised by PBL technical operations head Joey Guanio.

The tryout is set from 8 a.m. to 12 noon but the players are advised to come early for registration and further instructions.

Meanwhile, the management of Nutri-C is going to tap the players of Ateneo to spearhead its campaign in the coming tournament.

Cynthia Tiu’s Discovery Suite, on the other hand, will sponsor the RP women’s team to keep the Nationals in top form.

Also joining the tournament are Smart Sports of Manny Pangilinan, Ever Bilena of former PBL chairman Dioceldo Sy, Muscle Tape of Chito Narvasa, Oracle Residence of PBL chairman Mikee Romero, Pharex and Bacchus Energy Drink.
