Honda driving center holds instructors’ tilt

Parañaque: Honda Safety Driving Center (HSDC) announced it has concluded its instructors’ competition where it selected the Philippine representatives to the 12th Safety-Japan Instructors Competition in Suzuka, Japan, in October. HSDC said it has won the championship in the left-hand drive automobile category of last year’s event.

It added that during the local competition, instructors placed their mental and technical skills to the test when they took part in various exercises that involved driving safety techniques. Automobile exercises included braking and swerving (accident avoidance); figure driving (precision driving in tight

spaces); and slalom on wet surface. Motorcycle exercises, on the other hand, included emergency braking; staggered and course slalom; and narrow plank riding, HSDC said.

It said all these exercises are designed to further enhance instructors’ knowledge and skills on analytical driving, accuracy driving and balancing, which are all very crucial to having safer and more efficient drives.

According to HSDC, topping the event was Hermes Hermano who beat 12 instructors in the automobile and motorcycle categories.

“I will train very hard to achieve a decent finish,” Herman said. “More than winning the competition, my ultimate goal is to learn more about Honda’s unique approach to effective driver education by exchanging experiences and insights with my counterparts from other countries,” he added.

For his part, HSDC President Kazuhiko Ikezoe said “Honda instructors are awarded with a very noble mission. We make certain that they are exposed to international safety standards in order for them to become effective teachers.”

HSDC General Manager Arnel Doria said “Organizing friendly competition among instructors is an integral part of our operations. This is what we deem as our laboratory of curriculum and training methodologies. This is like our R&D where, ultimately, students will benefit from.”

The HSDC is at Km. 17 East Service Road, South Superhighway, Parañaque City. For inquiries, call 838-0814 and 837-2355 or send e-mail to customer_service@hondasafetydriving.ph.

Toyota to donate building in up diliman

TOYOTA Motor Phils. (TMP) said it is donating to the University of the Philippines in Diliman a P100 million building for the proposed GT Toyota Asian Center. The announcement was made by TMP Chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty at the company’s 20th anniversary celebration where of guests included President Gloria Arroyo.

“The center will promote greater awareness and appreciation of Asian cultures and societies and the Philippines place in Asia,” Ty said. “It will also encourage dialogue and collaboration with counterpart academic and cultural Institutions in Japan, China, and other Asian countries.”

Acknowledging the donation, UP President Emerlinda Roman and UP-Diliman Chancellor Sergio Cao said the center will strengthen the academic programs that focus on Asia in terms of teaching and research.

“The center will enhance UP’s role in national and regional policy formulation with respect to the country’s Asian linkages,” explained Roman.

TMP said the center will be constructed on a one-hectare property in the university and will have an Asian library and resource center with an Asian museum. TMP added a 500-seat capacity auditorium building is also being eyed for the project.

The center will also be the headquarters of the Institute of Asia Pacific Dialogue, Research and Policy Studies and of the UP Agenda for Asian Cultural Exchange and Cooperation, TMP said.

The donation is the latest major contribution from Toyota in its efforts to help in the social development of the country, TMP bared.

“We derive our resources from the society. So we should accordingly give back to society, said Ty. “As we look forward to another 20 years of partnership with the Philippines, we will continue to strive to contribute to the country’s development, to the economy as well as to society.”

According to TMP, earlier this year it partnered with the Automotive Association Philippines in launching a P5 million Traffic Safety Model Zone project in UP.
