NBI deploys automated clearance machine

by Cris Odronia, Tech Times Online reporter

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) recently deployed an automated clearance machines, or ACMs, specifically designed to make the process of clearance renewal easier and faster to Filipinos, especially to overseas Filipino workers.

The investigation bureau launched on Wednesday last week the availability of the clearance machine in its branch at the Carriedo Street in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

NBI Information Technology Officer Emelyn Aoanan said the machine was implemented to cut the long queues at their offices, estimated at around 10,000 people daily applying for the renewal clearance. With the machine, which made possible by Mega Data Corp., she said applicants would no longer have to wait long.

The machine, available in NBI Renewal kiosks in some shopping centers, applicants can now get the copy of their NBI clearances in a few minutes.

An ACM, which is similar to an ATM machine, works with a clearance renewal card or CRC that can be bought at the NBI offices for P120. The CRC will be inserted into the machine to operate.

So far, there are half a million users of the CRC nationwide.

Rafael Garcia, president of the Mega Data, said the renewal clearance card has the chip embedded in the electronic card where the person's facial biometrics and fingerprints were stored. "Mas secure ito kasi pag hindi nag-match yung information hindi mo makukuha yung NBI clearance card," (This is more secure because if the information in the chip doesn't match that of the applicant, he won't be able to get his NBI clearance card) he added.

The machine uses facial and fingerprint biometrics system to check the personal information of the individual applying for the clearance renewal.

By the end of this year, Garcia said 30 ACMs were expected to be installed nationwide. They are also planning to put up a clearance machine in some agencies, such as DFA and OWWA.

Mega Data is the NBI's systems integration company and technical systems provider since 1974. It is also the company behind the license renewal system of the Land Transportation Office.
